COTTRELL MAT

Description
Cottrell Mat is a 100 percent rag board made with only
the finest cotton linter fiber. The product is acid
free (acid neutral) and lignin free. It is buffered
with calcium carbonate.
Cotton Rag mats are historically used by museums and
galleries because cotton is naturally free of acid and
lignins. The Cottrell mats are a solid sheet or board
of cotton.
All Cottrell Mat products are buffered with calcium
carbonate. This ingredient retards the accumulation of
acids. Most cotton rag boards also have calcium
carbonate added even though they are naturally “acid
free”. The calcium carbonate combats environmental
pollutants that can increase acidity.
There are two types of mat board, standard mats and
archival mats. Standard mats are typically made with
high alpha kraft (wood) fibers. Archival mats are made
from 100% cotton fibers to a much higher standard. The
best archival mats are made from 100% cotton rag.
Application
Cottrell Mat is supplied as a 0.030” mat (2-Ply), 0.040”
mat (2-Ply), 0.060” mat (4-Ply), and a thick 0.090” mat
(6-Ply). Each product is manufactured with a white
cotton archival cotton rag. Cottrell Mat is most widely
used as a white cotton mat, although it has also been
used as a core product that has a colored paper facing.
