Our Promise
Committed to Sustainability
Sustainability
Manufacturing from Post-Manufactured Waste
At Cottrell Paper, sustainability begins with our raw materials. We manufacture premium paper products using post-manufactured waste—paper that has already served a purpose in the industrial cycle. By giving this material a second life, we reduce landfill burden, lower the demand for virgin fiber, and help close the loop on industrial paper use.
Sustainability
Hydroelectric Power
Our mill is powered by hydroelectric energy sourced directly from the waters that surround us. This renewable power source drastically reduces our reliance on fossil fuels and plays a central role in our low-impact production cycle. It’s clean, reliable, and perfectly aligned with our commitment to environmental responsibility.
Sustainability
Reusing All Paper Trim Waste
Nothing goes to waste at Cottrell Paper—not even our trimmings. Every scrap of trim generated during production is captured, repulped, and reincorporated into the manufacturing process. This internal recycling loop minimizes waste and maximizes resource efficiency, all while maintaining the high quality our customers expect.
Sustainability
Natural Gas Boiler Upgrade
As part of our ongoing efforts to reduce emissions, we’ve upgraded to a high-efficiency natural gas boiler. This modern system significantly lowers our carbon footprint by replacing older, more polluting heating methods. It’s another step toward a cleaner, more sustainable future for both our company and the communities we serve.
Sustainability
Composting Fiber Waste
Our commitment to sustainability doesn’t end at the paper machine. Fiber waste that can’t be reused is composted and transformed into nutrient-rich soil enhancement. This process not only keeps waste out of landfills but also contributes to healthier soil systems—giving back to the earth that sustains us.
100% Hemp Paper
100% Hemp Paper
RENEWABLE: 1 Acre of Hemp can produce as much paper as 4-10 acres of trees over a 20 year cycle. Hemp does not need pesticides or herbicides
HIGHER CELLULOSE CONTENT: Trees are made up of only 30% cellulose. This requires the use of toxic chemicals to remove the other 70%. Hemp, on the other hand, can have up to 85% cellulose content.
LOWER LIGNIN CONTENT: Hemp has lower lignin content than wood. Hemp contains 5 – 24% lignin whereas wood has 20-35%. This is advantageous as lignin must be removed from the pulp before it can be processed as paper.
DURABLE: Hemp paper is more durable than trees. Hemp does not yellow, crack, or deteriorate like tree paper. It is also one of the strongest natural fibers in the world, proving its longevity and durability.
NON TOXIC WHITENING: Hemp Paper does not require the use of toxic bleaching or other chemicals as wood pulp. Hemp can be whitened with hydrogen peroxide which is consumed in the process.
RECYCABLE: Hemp paper can be recycled up to 8 times; whereas, wood pulp can only be recycled 3 times. It is also compostable and biodegradable.
MORE STRETCH: Cottrell Paper’s 100% machine made hemp paper produced has more stretch built into it. Our hemp paper can stretched in both directions allowing it to be folded without the risk of cracking. This special process also greatly increases the ability of the paper to absorb energy without breaking when stressed.
